01/ - Our history
Our History is to promote the sport of rowing and to provide education on the benefits of rowing for all ages and abilities.
The Miami Rowing and Watersports Center (MRWC) was founded in 1973 by a group of veteran Cuban exiles passionate about rowing. They were soon joined by U.S. collegiate rowers and local novices, forming the foundation of the club. Miami Rowing and Watersports Center In 1979, MRWC relocated to a site between the Miami Marine Stadium and MAST Academy on Virginia Key. By 1984, with support from the City of Miami, a permanent boathouse was constructed, featuring rowing shell storage, a meeting space, and a competitive-size pool.
This facility supported the club's growing youth program, which won several state championships and competed at the Junior National Championships. Throughout the 1980s, MRWC's Masters and Youth rowing programs gained national recognition. The Masters program regularly secured gold medals at the U.S. Masters Nationals, leading to Miami hosting the 1990 U.S. Masters Nationals and the 1991 FISA World Masters Championships.
The latter event attracted thousands of competitors worldwide and was hailed as one of the most successful in FISA history. Today, MRWC is a premier rowing club in South Florida, offering programs for all ages and abilities, from youth to adult masters. The club continues to promote the sport of rowing and provides education on its benefits, reflecting the diverse community it serves.
