Miami Rowing Crews Make History at Henley Royal Regatta
For the first time ever, two Miami rowing crews proudly represented their city at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, one of the most iconic and storied rowing events in the world. This historic moment showcased Miami’s rise in the rowing community, with both Miami Rowing and Watersports Center (MRWC) and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School Crew earning spots in this globally renowned competition.
The Miami Rowing and Watersports Center quad—featuring rowers Mateo Montero (MAST Academy), George Pesin (Coral Reef), Michael Kourakos (Palmer Trinity), and Sebastian Sanchez (Gulliver Prep)—prequalified for the Fawley Cup Challenge after an incredible 2023-24 season in the U.S. Their consistent performance earned them a coveted position at Henley, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Similarly, Belen Jesuit’s crew made waves by clinching their spot in the Fawley Cup, outpacing 50 other boats in the qualifying race. Their quad—composed of Aiden Furness, Felix Caceres, David Caban, and Benjamin Ramos—proved to be a fierce competitor. Additionally, Belen Jesuit’s eight-man crew, led by Arturo Castelo, Evan Martinez, Andres Madrigal, and others, prequalified for the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup after a dominant domestic season.

Competing on the Global Stage
Held annually since 1839 on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames, England, the Henley Royal Regatta is revered worldwide, featuring over 200 high-caliber races. This year, it brought together Olympians, international champions, and talented young rowers from across the globe.
The MRWC quad faced a tough challenge in the Fawley Cup, competing against the local favorite Maidenhead Rowing Club. Despite a strong effort, they fell short by two boat lengths. Belen’s quad faced Shiplake Rowing Club, another Henley favorite, and were defeated by 2¼ boat lengths. In the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, Belen’s eight-man crew competed against the Southport School of Australia but came up short by 1¼ boat lengths.
A Testament to Growth
Although both Miami crews faced challenging opponents, their presence at Henley marks a significant milestone for rowing in South Florida. Competing on such an esteemed international stage reflects the dedication of these young athletes, their coaches, and their supportive communities.
Cesar Herrera, MRWC Head Coach and Director, and Yunian Cabrera, Belen Jesuit Crew Head Coach, both expressed pride in their teams’ efforts, highlighting the discipline and determination that brought their crews to Henley.

This historic moment is only the beginning for Miami rowing. With the growing prominence of programs like Miami Rowing and Watersports Center and Belen Jesuit Crew, South Florida is poised to become a powerhouse in the rowing world.
